Van Life: How to Make Your Van More Energy Efficient 

After summers of RV road trips and weekend camping, you might be ready for a new way to explore the outdoors, especially one that is flexible and sustainable.  

The modern camper van offers a new kind of adventure, combining freedom, comfort, and energy efficiency for the eco-conscious traveler. Modern camper vans are evolving with demand, offering customizable features that let you disconnect on your own terms.  

Camper van travel is growing in popularity, but it’s more than a fad. Long before luxury brands like the Mercedes Sprinter, there was the common Volkswagen Bus. As camper vans have evolved, so has efficiency and technology.

Van life requires smart energy use. There are limited power sources on the road, meaning that energy efficiency isn’t just good for the planet, it’s essential. A more energy-efficient setup means fewer fuel stops, less generator noise, and more time enjoying the outdoors. With modern battery technology, solar power, and low-energy appliances, you can travel lighter, farther, and more sustainably.  

As a more cost-effective solution to gas-powered generators, the camper van succeeds in both reliability and dependability. 

Energy-Saving Camper Van Upgrades 

Solar Power Setup 

Install a solar panel system on your van’s roof to keep batteries charged for free using the sun. This is perfect for powering your van’s fridge, fans, or laptops without relying on finding campsites or carrying around noisy generators.  

Portable Power Stations 

Your van’s battery can easily power small electronics like a phone charger. However, for longer trips or if you need to use devices that require a 120-volt AC outlet, it’s worth investing in a portable power station, especially if your van doesn’t have built-in lithium batteries. This will ensure you can keep your laptop, blender, or stovetop running smoothly during your travels. 

Induction or Infrared Cooktops 

While propane heaters and cooktops are available, they can also pose a safety hazard if used without proper ventilation. For a safer cooking option, consider an electric infrared burner. The versatility of this type of cooking device means you can prepare meals on your timeline, without being influenced or delayed by the weather.  

Energy-Efficient Vent Fans and Heaters 

You can install 12V roof vans for better airflow and use efficient diesel heaters or electric ceramic heaters with thermostats to save your battery energy.  

LED and USB-Powered Lighting 

USB chargeable and stick-up lights are always good to have around to brighten your space without draining valuable power.  

Essential Off-Grid Van Life Gadgets  

The point of loading up a van is to get out into nature and disconnect, decompress, and take a break. That doesn’t mean you have to leave behind all the comforts or conveniences of home. Pick up some of these (mainly) electric accessories to elevate your van experience. 

Low-energy van life accessories help you maximize your energy efficiency and time outdoors.  

• WonderWash  

If you plan to take off for an extended trip, you may need to do a load of laundry while you’re out. Save on laundromats – or save yourself the headache of finding one – with a hand-crank washing device like the WonderWash Portable Washing Machine. It may sound labor intensive, but it’s easy to use and lightweight. Just hang your clothes to dry.  

• Electric Cooking 

Fuel-based cooking sources like propane cause condensation in vans, which can mean water damage to the interior. There are a variety of electric cooktops available that are built for a van’s small counter space. Small 600-watt microwaves are also an option for cooking on the road. 

• Garmin InReach 

A Garmin InReach can keep you within reach of help in an emergency. This two-way satellite communicator is good if you’re truly going off the grid to get into nature.

Destinations to Explore on Your Energy-Efficient Travels  

There are so many beautiful places to see in each state our members serve.  

Consider a jaunt along a leg of the Lincoln Highway Scenic Byway in western Nebraska or head further west into Wyoming’s rugged landscape to find the perfect place to park. 

Driving through the mountains in September and October can show you why folks refer to Colorful Colorado or the Land of Enchantment in New Mexico.  

There are many national parks across these areas, too. Use a smartphone app like Campendium to find a camping spot, or Wikiloc to plan your hike or locate a mountain biking trail. If you’re looking for a place to park overnight along the way, iOverlander or Roadtrippers can point you in the right direction. 

From finding laundromats to discovering dog-friendly parks or van-friendly breweries, there’s an app for nearly every travel need. 

Not Ready to Buy? Try Renting First 

Not ready to commit to a van just yet? Luckily, they’re available to rent, similar to regular RVs. You can find one near you by searching for camper van rentals or calling a local RV rental or dealer.  

Electric versions of the camper van aren’t widely available yet, but RV manufacturers are working to increase the mileage range of these electric options. Ford has a 2025 electric van model that’s made to do it all while delivering efficiency on the road. 

Traveling during spring and fall, which are considered shoulder seasons, can also save you money while reducing the need for energy-intensive heating or cooling. In some states, these months are much cooler or warmer than peak seasons. You can reduce your energy usage for heating and cooling by planning strategic times to visit your favorite national parks.  

Going All-in on the Nomad Lifestyle 

Energy-efficient van life makes travel more sustainable and rewarding, plus as more vanlifers hit the road, you’ll find no shortage of inspiration. You can continue to live vicariously through your favorite Instagram accounts and bloggers as they share stunning travel photography and inspiring stories.
