Strength in a
diverse energy mix
Building for the future
We’re evolving our energy mix now to support our members’ needs into the future.
When we design our energy mix — including solar, wind, natural gas, batteries and hydro — we can supply power for future generations. Whether strengthening for storm resilience or meeting the growing energy demand, we’re safeguarding reliability for the rural West. The generation we’re building for will be as clean and affordable as possible.

Power when you need it most
An on-demand resource like a natural gas plant is critical for shoring-up capacity during times of high energy use, low renewable output, or extreme weather conditions. Having multiple sources of generation is how we maintain reliability.
Low-cost, clean power
We pool resources to develop larger, utility-scale renewables so members receive competitive prices for wind and solar energy. Once built, renewables have a low operating cost. They eliminate fuel costs by harnessing the abundant solar and wind resources across the West.
Many of these large wind and solar farms are located in our members' service territories so that the tax benefits stay within the communities served by cooperatives.

Partnering with our members to add flexible, clean power
Our Bring Your Own Resource program provides flexibility to Tri-State members by allowing them to develop their own projects that reflect the unique advantages and needs in their service area and keep consumer costs low. Recently accepted by federal regulators, these projects undergo independent evaluations to meet reliability, economic, and environmental criteria. We expect many future projects in the program to utilize renewable energy sources. This will help us continue our commitment to achieving 50% renewable energy usage by our members in 2025, with a goal of 70% by 2030.
