Electricity is a powerful tool, but we also know how important it is to be safe around electricity. In our power plants, along our transmission lines and in our electrical substations, our employees are focused on electrical safety, just as you are in your homes and businesses.

Electricity is also a powerful force of nature, and there’s no better demonstration of that power than what we see in the spring and summer lightning season. If you’ve spent some time on the plains or in the mountains across the West, where electric cooperatives serve, you know all about spring and summer storms. Especially noteworthy are the intense storms that begin in March and can last into May. For those who enjoy outdoor activities during this season, it is especially important to be aware of the dangers and take precautions while camping.

We just can’t think about safety inside, as hikers, campers, and others who participate in outdoor recreation are among the highest group of lightning storm-related deaths and injuries. If you’re heading out this season for a weekend camping trip, there are some important safety tips to be aware of before you go.

Storm Safety Tips While Camping

Plan ahead and familiarize yourself with the location, weather forecast and conditions before venturing out. Keep in mind that even if you're staying close to home, bad weather can strike at any time. Locate nearby shelters close to your camping site and keep an eye on the National Weather Service for updates. Carry a battery-powered NOAA radio with you to stay updated. Be prepared to flee to a safe shelter if a thunderstorm watch or thunderstorm warning is issued.

If you're setting up a tent, avoid placing it on high ground. Large, open fields, grasslands, or pitches under trees and metal poles should be avoided as well. In the event of a lightning strike, a large open area can be struck by a ground current, while tall objects like trees can be struck by a side flash. Learn more about the different types of lightning strikes

If you find yourself caught in a storm while camping, your tent is only a shelter from the rain and offers no protection from lightning strikes. Keep in mind there are secondary dangers associated with thunderstorms such as flash floods, mudslides, exposure/hypothermia, high winds, tornadoes, forest fires and hail. In the case of a heavy storm, your tent can easily be ravaged by hail, high winds and rain.

During a thunderstorm, the safest place to be is inside a large, structurally sound building with plumbing and electrical wiring. Electricity is carried from the building to the ground by the electrical wiring and plumbing, so it will not travel through the rooms. These structures are typically sturdy enough to remain structurally sound even if struck by lightning. A fully enclosed small building with plumbing and electricity, such as a bathroom, convenience store, or ranger station would be the next safest place.

If neither of those options is available, get into your vehicle (unless it is a convertible). Your car's metal frame acts as a Faraday Cage. Rather than dispersing electricity within the car, your automobile's metal frame will disperse electricity via the frame and to the ground through the tires. However, avoid touching the steering wheel or doors, as they are connected to the frame.

If you are camping in an RV, follow the same safety precautions when setting up and have an evacuation plan for a nearby safety shelter. RVs can be blown over in high winds and susceptible to dangers if flooding occurs. If you see lightning or hear thunder, stay inside. If you are unable to get to a safer building, try to stay in a hallway and away from windows, cabinets, and areas where flying objects can occur. Unplug electronics like TVs, microwaves, computers, and coffee pots, and only use battery-powered devices.

Safety Tips for Hikers

If you’re hiking a 14er, fishing, or out on a trail away from a shelter, be prepared for anything with an emergency kit that includes weather safety gear, a waterproof jacket, some essential camping gadgets and a portable lightning detector. If you’re hiking away from your vehicle, avoid high ridges or peaks. If you find yourself caught in a storm unexpectedly, get down to lower levels as soon as you can and crouch as low as you can on the ground, stabilizing yourself with your feet only.

There are many western residents who enjoy hiking 14ers ("fourteeners", a term used to describe mountains that are at 14,000 feet or higher elevation), especially during the summer months.

One thing to keep in mind during the summer monsoon season in the west is the consistent storms that occur around 1 or 2 PM, though it is not unusual for them to show up earlier. These storms create a lot of lightning at high altitudes. Anyone exposed on alpine terrain is at significant risk because there is nothing above the tree line to strike – but you.

Due to these consistent storms, many savvy hikers, no matter where they are on the mountain, will set a non-negotiable turnaround time in order to allow for the time needed to get back down below the tree line before the mountain peak thunderstorms appear.

If you do get caught in rain, it’s critical to get out of wet clothing and into dry clothing as quickly as possible. Water transfers heat 25x faster than air, and you will get cold quickly when wearing wet clothing.

Quick Tips for Safe Camping During Thunderstorms

Be observant of the weather at all times.

Don’t be, or be next to, the tallest object in the area – pitch your tent in lower-level areas away from the highest objects or trees.

Don’t touch your tent’s frame or cover.

Try to stay in the very middle of your tent. Sit in a squatted position as compact as possible, touching the ground only in one spot with your feet. Never sit on the bare ground. Use a dry, deflated air mattress folded several times, a camping mat, or your backpack to help enhance insulation making you less grounded. Wear hiking boots, if you have them.

Don’t stand in open buildings such as barns, picnic pavilions, sheds or buildings without plumbing or wiring.

Use your car if there is no other shelter, but avoid touching the sides, handles or steering wheel.

Do your best to stay warm and dry – bring waterproof and warm clothing.

Get off the water or the mountain if a storm is rolling in.

Be prepared with an evacuation route and safe shelter location.

Pack and carry a safety kit.

While lightning strikes are considered rare (1 in 500,000 per year), the potential dangers of lightning are something that should always be taken seriously. A portable power station can offer 225-watt hours capacity, which will power mobile devices, CPAPs, computers, and small appliances (such as a mini-fridge) under 200 watts. Keep it charged and it will offer a little relief during power outages.

Stock up on Water

Although it is improbable that your water supply will fail, it can happen. When the power goes out, you're out of luck if you have a private well that relies on electricity to pump water.

Stock enough water to last at least three days. You'll need one gallon of water per person every day. For a family of four, you'll need 12 gallons of water if you're preparing for a three-day emergency. Additional water should be kept on hand for cooking, cleaning, personal hygiene, and pets. If time allows, and the forecast predicts long and heavy storms, consider filling your bathtub with water. A typical bathtub can store approximately 40 gallons of clean water.

Stock Non-Perishable Foods

Store shelves of non-perishable foods may be empty as soon as the weather forecast is announced. Rather than fighting the crowds, keep your pantry stocked with shelf-stable, non-cooking items. Examples include peanut butter, nuts, powdered and evaporated milk, packaged tuna, crackers, cereal, protein bars, granola bars, dried fruit, canned fruit or vegetable juice, canned vegetables, beef or chicken bouillon, instant coffee, tea and powdered drink mixes.

Keep track of expiration dates and avoid discount foods that may be close to expiration dates. Your aim is to buy bulk items that may have to be used later. Keep a manual can opener and scissors in a convenient location.

Don’t forget pet food and chews for your four-legged friends!

Fill up on Gas, or Charge your EV

Because gas stations use electricity to power their pumps, it's critical to fill your vehicle’s fuel tank before the storm strikes. There may be no fuel if there is no power.

Charge your EV plug-in or hybrid vehicles.

If you have a home generator, get gas for your backup generator while you're at it. (Because portable generators produce carbon monoxide, they should never be used inside a home or garage.) Read more about safety with generators.

Generator Safety Tips:

When using a generator, it’s important to reach out to your local electric co-op or public power district to ensure safety. There are opportunities for a portable generator to be dangerous to you and to those who work on power lines. Electrical currents run bi-directionally on the lines. If you plan on connecting a generator to your home wiring, your attention to safety precautions will ensure your generator doesn’t send powerful electricity the wrong way down the line.

This is called back feed, and it can hurt line workers or anyone else near a downed power line. The only safe way to connect to your homes’ wiring is to put in place a transfer switch, to prevent back feed. The transfer switch is an essential component that also provides protection to the generator and home wiring when the normal power is restored.

Prepare for Outdoor Cooking

If you want to use a propane stove, gas, or charcoal grill for cooking, keep the necessary supplies on hand. If you have a wood-burning stove, keep a dry woodpile filled and ready to go.

Prepare for Cold Weather

Blankets are essential in the event of a power outage. However, if you live in an area of the country that experiences severe winter weather, you should add sub-zero sleeping bags (one for each family member) in your emergency supplies. They're excellent at trapping body heat, especially the more premium down-filled varieties, that keep you toasty warm in sub-zero temperatures. Look for styles that can be unzipped and used as blankets. Check your local outdoor or Army-Navy supplies store for cold weather sleeping bags, socks and sweaters.

If you don't have a lot of storage space, emergency thermal blankets (also known as space blankets) constructed of thin aluminized polyester film are a good solution. They're windproof and waterproof, and they reflect body heat to keep you warm. Keep a handful of these small warmers in your car for when you're away from home. Be aware that space blankets are electrically conductive and extremely flammable. Use caution and keep away from exposed electrical sources and open flames. Finally, if you're lucky enough to have a fireplace or wood burner to heat your home, keep enough dry wood on hand.

Power Outage Safety Tips

Keep freezers and refrigerators closed.

If you use a generator, ONLY use outdoors and away from windows. Generators, camp stoves or charcoal grills should always be used outdoors, and at least 20 feet away from homes and windows.

Do not use a gas stove or oven to heat your home.

Disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid damage from electrical surges.

Have alternate plans for refrigerating medicines or using power-dependent medical devices.

Check with your local public safety agencies for emergency heating and cooling locations open near you.

Install carbon monoxide detectors with battery backup in central locations on every level of your home.

During a power outage, you'll likely feel at ease if you've planned ahead. To make sure you've covered everything, refer to the checklist above. You can prepare your emergency kit and supplies with everything you need, from food and water to medicine and first aid, to ensure that the hours or even days without electricity are as painless as possible.

During such challenging times, be a good neighbor. Check on family, friends, and neighbors, especially the elderly, those who live alone, those with medical conditions, and those who may need additional assistance.

Weather conditions, road closures, and other hazards may delay restoration efforts. Please be patient and know that crews will be working as quickly and safely as possible to restore power.

____

Tri-State is a not-for-profit cooperative of 44 members, including 41 member utility electric distribution cooperatives and public power districts in four states, that together deliver reliable, affordable, and responsible power to more than a million electricity consumers across nearly 200,000 square miles of the West. Pets, like children, are unaware of the dangers posed by plugs, wires, and electrical devices in the home. Because pets are naturally curious, they may begin to play with or chew on your electrical items, posing a fire or shock that could result in injury. Fortunately, there are simple and preventive measures you can take to safeguard your pets.

Tips for keeping your pets safe from electrical hazards

Keep power cables secure and hidden

Electrical wires, particularly those dangling from the edge of tables or countertops, are a serious hazard to pets who like to play with or chew on them. Playing with or chewing on a wire can result in shock, burns, injuries from a falling object or electrocution. Avoid trouble by keeping electrical wires out of their reach and hidden. If you can't cover wires well enough, use plastic tubing designed for concealing wires.

Never leave electrical appliances unattended

When lamps, fans, makeup mirrors, irons, or heaters are not in use, it is simple to forget to switch them off. Leaving them connected to the power source, on the other hand, can be hazardous to your pet, especially if you are not at home.

Turning off or unplugging appliances keeps you safe while also saving you money on the cost of unused electricity or having to replace damaged appliances. Lighter-weight flat-screen TVs should be securely mounted to the walls or a sturdy base to avoid tipping over. Curious cats love to get on counters, tables and shelves where electronics can be knocked off.

Set boundaries for your pet

This recommendation is primarily for pets with free access to your home. Teaching them to avoid certain areas will improve safety. As a deterrent, you can keep cats and dogs away from your electrical items by treating the area with bitter spray. Most dogs and cats have a negative reaction to the taste or smell. Keeping cats off counters is a little trickier while you’re away. If you have a way to close off certain rooms to avoid curiosity, this may be a good precautionary measure.

Electricity and water should always be avoided

Because electricity and water don't mix, it's a good idea to avoid placing electrical items anywhere near bathtubs, sinks, or other areas where water is routinely used. Always provide fresh water for your pets to reduce the risk of them seeking water elsewhere in the house.

Ensure your yard is secure and properly fenced

Pets love to play outside, which can be hazardous if precautions aren’t taken. Use string lights anywhere outdoors where you want to create ambiance and add décor

2. String lights can be used in many different ways - on a porch, around a tree, gazebo, hung above an outdoor dining table, along the driveway, or in a courtyard

3. Incandescent bulbs are appropriate for outdoor use as long as they are protected from direct contact with water, but it’s advisable to use string lights that are designed for ‘all-weather’ conditions. Incandescent bulbs are not energy efficient compared to LED bulbs.

Choosing the Right Outdoor LED Bulbs

Underwriters Laboratories has ratings for different types of LED lights, which include dry, damp and wet ratings.

Damp-rated LED lights and fixtures can only handle indirect exposure to water, such as a bathroom or under a patio awning. There may be some slight moisture accumulation, but very little.

Wet-rated LED lights and lighting fixtures can handle direct exposure to water and may be within dripping or flowing water, as they’re tightly sealed against water. These may be near a pool, fountain, or in an area that receives rain or snowfall.

Keep in mind, neither one of these lights should ever be submerged. While they can be exposed to water to some degree, they are not fully waterproof. Electric shock can occur, so use caution.

Not all LED lights are damp-rated. LED bulbs that have neither of these ratings are not totally enclosed, and therefore, are not suitable for use around wet conditions or water.

String Light Safety Tips

Only use outdoor-rated extension cords

Use outdoor-rated bulbs

Carefully read instructions before using any type of light system and follow manufacturer guidelines when hanging

Keep cords away from doorways or other walkways outside by placing strings under eaves

Install lights above ground level in shrubs, trees, or vines where they cannot pose as tripping hazards

Make sure there is nothing that will come into contact with the cord that might move around during high winds (such as umbrellas) which could knock over lights

Avoid leaving open sockets

Protect connected plugs from water

Use GFCI outlets for protection against electrical circuit failure

Do not overload your circuits

Fire Safety Precautions for Outdoor String Lights

Outdoor lights should not be left on for prolonged periods of time or overnight. However, as we kick back and enjoy the summer, the season can also cause a few headaches for homeowners, especially when it comes to electrical issues.

For summer safety, we have included some of the most common electrical problems that can occur in the summertime, and how to avoid them.

Get your AC unit serviced. Set your home up for cooling success by having your air conditioning checked. The last thing you want is you’re A/C going out during the hottest months of July and August. Unfortunately, this happens often with homeowners due to the daily strain on A/C units. For more energy-efficient cooling options, learn how to cool your home without central air conditioning.

Secure portable AC units. If you have any portable air conditioning units, make sure they are securely placed with cords tucked away. A/C cords are unsafe for pets and children and can cause tripping hazards that could lead to electrical shock or a heavy unit falling.

Keep electronic devices away from water. Music and pool parties go hand-in-hand, however, electricity and water do not! Remember to keep all electrical appliances and cords away from pools and water.

Prepare for power outages. Although early summer brings mostly pleasant weather, the hotter months can also bring their fair share of stormy weather and the potential for power outages. If you do experience a power outage, keep refrigerators and freezers closed to keep food fresh. Air conditioners should be turned off. Wait several minutes after the restoration of power before turning them back on. Contact your electric co-op if you use any electric life support devices in your home.

Power surge protection. Power surges can also occur because of lightning storms. If the surges are excessive, they can result in electrical fires. Use a surge protector with electronic devices, or turn off and unplug appliances and devices during a lightning storm. If you live in an area with seasonal lightning storms, consider installing a whole-home surge protector.

Circuit breaker maintenance. Heavy electrical usage may mean endless tripped circuit breakers. If your home is older, it may not be outfitted for today’s electrical loads. Have your circuit breaker inspected for safety and consider upgrading to a breaker box that can handle the heavier draw of your appliances. As a rule of thumb, electric panels need replacing every 25-40 years, so if your home is that age, there’s a likelihood that you could need to upgrade.

Pest control. With warmer weather, pests like mice, rats and squirrels can become a nuisance, nesting in your attic, walls or basement, and chewing on electrical wiring. Before you hang them, inspect all electric decorations for damage before using them. Check for any signs of damaged plugs, frayed cords, loose bulbs, cracked light sockets, bare wires, or loose connections. If something is questionable, don’t try to fix it with tape. The few bucks you’ll save aren’t worth the thousands you may lose if there’s a fire. Toss any damaged items and replace them.

Make sure to use lights you choose for outdoor use are designated as “outdoor” lights. Outside lights should have a fuse built into each strand’s plug and may be labeled “for outdoor use.”

Avoid overloading electrical outlets. Overloaded electrical outlets and faulty wires are a common cause of fires during the holidays. As much as you may want to be the most lit up house on the block, you may have to tone it down, depending on your outlets. Check the string lights' packaging for the power output and never plug in more than what a power strip or outlet recommends. Avoid connecting more than three strings of lights in one series.

Opt for battery-operated candles for your holiday décor instead of open flame candles. Many battery-operated candles look very warm and realistic, without the fire hazard.

Protect electrical cords from getting damaged. Keep pets away from electrical cords (and glass ornaments!). Pets can chew on cords, creating a hazard for electrical shock or fire. Electrical cords should never be pinched by furniture, placed under rugs, or attached by nails, tacks, or staples.

Check electrical decorations for the UL, CSA, or ETL testing certifications. Decorations not bearing a label from any one of these independent electrical testing laboratories have not been tested for safety and could be hazardous.

Turn off and unplug all decorations when unattended or if you’re leaving the home.

Switch out incandescent lights for LED lights. Not only does it conserve electricity, but it doesn’t get as hot as traditional bulbs.

Practice safety on the ladder when hanging holiday lights. Hanging lights on the house are probably one of the most memorable times you’ll have for the holidays. Using the buddy system (i.e. having someone spot you) and securing the ladder on a hard, flat, secure surface is important to avoid falling.

Other Important Holiday Safety Tips

Never leave candles unattended. If you have curious cats who like to jump on counters, candles can be tipped over easily. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) found that 52% of decoration-related fires were started by candles.

Some holiday plants, while beautiful, are very harmful! Popular holiday plants that are poisonous to children and pets, include mistletoe and holly berries. Poinsettias are also said to be mildly toxic to pets.

Keep menorahs and kinaras at least three feet from flammable materials like curtains or decorations.

If you’re decorating a live Christmas tree, make sure it is well-watered daily or as often as needed. When real Christmas trees aren’t watered regularly, the needles get dry and become a fire hazard against lights that get too hot. If needed, set a reminder on your phone to check the water level. Make sure the tree is not covering a heat vent. Each holiday season, fire departments respond to an average of 210 Christmas tree fires nationally, reports the NFPA.

The holidays are the perfect time for a warm fireplace! Make sure the chimney is clean and free of any debris (leaves or bird’s nests) before using. Use a fireplace screen at all times and keep all logs, kindling, and flammable materials at least three feet from the fireplace hollow. Don’t try to burn anything else other than logs in the fireplace. Before going to bed or leaving the house, make sure the coals are extinguished and put the ashes in a metal bin at least 25 feet away from the house.

Don’t forget to prep the sidewalks and the outside of your home! Keep your driveway and walkways clear of ice and snow with rock salt or a pet-safe ice melt. If you have to shovel snow this holiday season, there are electric snow blowers that can help make the job a lot easier (and safer!)

Keep older kids’ toys and gadgets away from small children. Some items for the older kids may have small parts and potential choking hazards.

If you’re leaving your house unattended for a few days during the holidays, make sure to secure your home. Have a neighbor keep an eye out and keep you informed of any unusual activity. If possible, install a smart home monitoring device or front door camera that you can control from your phone or tablet.

Planning ahead, following important safety tips, and securing your home can make all the difference for an enjoyable and safe holiday season! For more information on safety with electrical gadgets or appliances, contact your local energy experts and energy co-op PPD.

______

Tri-State is a not-for-profit cooperative of 44 members, including 41 member utility electric distribution cooperatives and public power districts in four states, that together deliver reliable, affordable and responsible power to more than a million electricity consumers across nearly 200,000 square miles of the West. Our list of safe fall activities at home will help you embrace the best of the season with your loved ones - all while saving money and staying close to home.

No matter the size of your family, or the age of your kids, you can make new and lasting memories this fall. And keep these electrical safety tips at the ready to keep your family safe as you play.

1. Go on a nature hike. Even if you live in the city, create a route around your neighborhood or a local park or nature area that will ensure your family enjoys some outdoor time! Enlist the help of your grade school-aged kids to create a nature bingo sheet for the hike. Make spaces with things like acorns, colored leaves, ravens, and squirrels. Whoever gets a bingo first gets to choose the post-hike snack!

Safety tip: While you’re out, help your kids identify power lines in your neighborhood and talk about how to keep a safe, 10-foot distance from electrical lines.

2. Tailgate from home. If your family enjoys watching games together each weekend, you can create a game-day atmosphere without leaving home! Create the feeling of a tailgate party on your back deck, in your driveway, or even in your living room. Lay out cozy blankets, paper goods, and spirit wear. Cook up your favorite game-day snacks, too, for the ultimate fall activity at home!

If you plan to tailgate outside, double-check your outdoor lights and extension cords before you gather for game day. Extension cords are made specifically for indoor or outdoor use, so make sure your outdoor cords are made to withstand the elements. Inspect sockets plugs for frayed or broken pieces. Learn more here about electrical safety checks to do around your home.

3. Carve, decorate and light up those pumpkins! Challenge each member of your family to create a custom pumpkin design. Carving, painting, collage – any method is allowed! Give supportive feedback on each family member’s creation. And once your family of pumpkins is complete, enlist everyone’s help to create a pumpkin display in your front room or porch, enhanced with holiday-themed decorative lights.

While you’re plugging in holiday lights: Check the cords of your decorative lights, as well as your indoor and outdoor appliances and plugs throughout your house. Make sure none of your cords are damaged or sitting out in high-traffic areas. If your kids are learning at home, make sure their laptops and cords aren’t sitting in a place where they could be tripped on.

4. Make your own fall candles - and get some gifts ready for the holidays! Follow an easy DIY recipe for at-home candle-making, selecting autumnal flavors such as cinnamon, clove, pumpkin, and vanilla. Then, display them throughout your house! Burning candles is a way to add a cozy feeling to your home without using additional electricity. Make some extra candles to give to family members as holiday gifts!

Use your candles safely! Candles can be used safely at home as long as you set family rules and expectations. Never leave candles unattended, and ensure lit candles are put in places that avoid plants, paper, drapes, and other flammable materials.

Looking for other small ways to save energy this season? Check out this post for simple ways to reduce your home’s energy consumption and save money on your electric bill.

5. Add new plants and trees to your yard before winter. Recruit your family to help choose some new bushes, flowers or trees from your community garden center to add to your yard. Create a game or contest to determine who gets to choose where your new plants will be placed! Then bring the family together to plant them before the weather gets cold.

Plant smart! Some plant varieties can have an insulating effect on your home and help you save on your energy bills this winter, such as wind-blocking bushes and trees. Tip: Do not plant tall vegetation on the south side of your home. This will prevent the sun from entering and warming your house in colder months.

Plant safely! Trees should not be planted within 25 feet of a power line. All trees and bushes should also avoid areas around electric meters, transformers, or other equipment. Before digging, visit Call Before You Dig, and call the local underground utility locator service at 811 to mark the location of underground utilities, so you don’t accidentally come into contact with a power line.

Here’s to a fun-filled fall season with your family! As the weather gets colder, we’re sharing some tips to keep you, your home and your family safe when the snow flurries turn to blizzards.

Have questions about your electricity? Please contact the experts at your local electric cooperative or public power district to learn more.

Winter Storm Safety Tips

When snow accumulates, it can put a heavy load on things. Wind can also knock power lines loose or blow damaging debris around. Knowing what the dangers can be ahead of a bad winter storm can keep you and your family safe.

Be aware of any electric cables surrounding your house. Knowing where they are can help you take inventory after a storm to make sure no damage has occurred.

You are often told to stay away from downed power lines, and we’ll say it again: Stay away from downed power lines. But what does one look like? And what should you do?

A power line that goes down can actually look different depending on the situation. Sometimes it’s very dramatic and you cannot miss it – sparks or fire may be visible, as well as damage to poles and other equipment.

But other times, the risk is harder to spot but just as dangerous. A downed line may look just like a cable laying on the ground, or an end may be covered in snow. You should always assume any power line that’s out of place may be live.

Call your local electric utility to report it. If it’s sparking, on fire, or in contact with a car, building, or other structure, call 911 to report it, too. Do not approach or go near downed power lines. Call from inside your home, and let the professionals investigate the situation.

Improper generator use can send deadly electricity through lines that you thought were cut off from power. Make sure you’re operating generators safely during the winter months.

It’s a good idea to always plug essential electronics, like computers, into a surge protector outlet strip. These devices control for any unpredictable currents, and will keep your devices safe and running steady during any weather.

If the power goes out in winter, have supplies like batteries, battery-powered radio or TV, and flashlights on hand.

Also, be prepared to stay warm! Keep non-perishable food, water and blankets in your storm kit. If you use an alternate heat source like a fireplace, follow any system instructions, use fire safeguards, and ventilate your area properly.

If you live with a child, elderly person or someone who can’t stay warm on their own, you may need to take them somewhere with power if there’s ever a storm that causes an extended outage. Plan ahead for this possibility by thinking about where you would go and how you would get there.

Keep these tips in mind as you ready your home for winter, and you’ll feel more secure no matter the forecast.

______

Tri-State is a not-for-profit cooperative of 44 members, including 41 member utility electric distribution cooperatives and public power districts in four states, that together deliver reliable, affordable, and responsible power to more than a million electricity consumers across nearly 200,000 square miles of the West.

Contributor:

Kent Mahanna, MPH, CSP Sr. Manager Safety & Security

Blog Posts

Energy Efficient Heating Options for Rural Communities in the West

As winter approaches, rural communities in the West face the on-going challenge of keeping their homes warm while managing energy costs. Dedicating an area to a home gym is one way to get the most out of an unused garage, basement or room. Taking some basic electrical safety precautions can keep your equipment up to speed for leg day, arm day and all the activity in between.

Regardless of how you’re getting your exercise, how you set up your space can have a big impact on how safe it is. Take some time before you set up to consider these aspects of your home gym.

Home Gym Storage Ideas

Between stretch bands, yoga mats, kettlebells and free weights, there can be a lot of clutter in a home gym, and a lot of stuff to trip over. And that’s even before you add in big equipment like a treadmill or stationary bike. Start with an organized area with plenty of storage to keep things out of the way.

If you’re setting up in a garage, use shelving or peg boards. Plastic storage totes can keep littler items off the floor and dry.

A workout space in a room in your home may need a more decorative touch to coexist with an office, guest room or larger living area. Keep accessories and weights out of sight in a closet (in those plastic storage totes, even). There are many furniture options like benches, ottomans or smaller tables with hidden storage for organization.

You can also repurpose bookshelves, dressers or coat racks that are already in your home to store your workout gear

Tips for a Safe Home Gym

Once you know where you’re going to put everything, you can further evaluate the room where you’ll be spending your gym time. Here are some important safety tips to follow:

Make sure you have enough light to see what you’re doing. Pumping iron or a brisk treadmill jog in a dark room can make injuries happen more easily.

Proper flooring like rubber mats can help stabilize machines when you’re going all out. Stable footing for weight lifting or interval training is important to workout safely, as well. Mats can also reduce noise from your treadmill or dumbbell drops.

Keep plenty of towels nearby for promptly wiping up sweat and spilled water, these liquids can lead to creating slippery surfaces that can pose slipping and falling injuries.

Take care to cover any exposed insulation, and make sure your workout room is properly ventilated. We have you covered for options to keep a room cool without central air conditioning.

If you’re bringing in a lot of equipment or really heavy weights to an upstairs room, double check the bracing on your floors. Deadlifts that make you fall through the ceiling aren’t good for your health or your home.

You can also replicate a gym environment by installing a TV or sound system. With so many workouts and instructors on YouTube, you can have the feel of a class at home. Use chalkboard or whiteboard paint on a wall to keep track of your activities and to write inspiration or encouragement!

The more equipment you bring into your home gym, the more important it is to make sure all of your electricity needs are safely covered.

Electric Safety for Home Gyms

Now that you have your space planned out, organized and you’re ready to get plugged in, these tips will keep it all powered safely.

If you’re setting up in an unfinished garage, basement or outdoor area, make sure your outlets have a ground fault circuit interrupter. These outlets detect any irregularities, like water in the circuitry, and cut electricity to prevent shocks.

Make certain your home electrical wiring and capacity will handle any new exercise appliances you plan on plugging in. An older home may not be adequately wired for the energy consumption of our modern equipment, so it’s good practice to verify first. An electrical circuit that isn’t prepared to handle your workout can pose a danger of fire or shock. If any wiring needs replaced or upgraded, don’t try to do it yourself; call an electrician.

Double check the condition of cords and plugs before using them. Whether it’s a brand new spin bike or that treadmill from years ago that ended up in storage, cords can fray, be cut or damaged in another way so it’s best to visually inspect them.

If you’re using extension cords as a temporary stopgap measure – which is the only safe way to use them – make sure you’re using the correct type of cord. Any extension cord used outside should be one specially made for the elements. Never try to plug a three-prong plug into a two-prong outlet, either.

Prevent trips and falls, and potentially ripping a cord out of the wall or equipment, by placing a cover over any cords on the ground. This could just be using duck tape, or you can purchase a special rubber cord cover.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Water and electricity do not mix. Water bottles can spill, and you may be sweaty from working out, so be aware of damp conditions before you grab cords, touch circuit breakers, other wiring, or any standing water around your electrical equipment.

Once you’re all safely set up, your workouts can be done at home – no excuses.

Have questions about your electricity? Please contact the experts at your local electric cooperative or public power district to learn more.

Electrify and Save™

Kent Mahanna, MPH, CSP Senior Manager Safety & Security

Blog Posts

Energy Efficient Heating Options for Rural Communities in the West

As winter approaches, rural communities in the West face the on-going challenge of keeping their homes warm while managing energy costs.
